As this long summer of game announcements marches on, Nintendo has officially confirmed that Pikmin 3 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. Originally released for the Wii U in 2013, Pikmin 3 was a well-received follow-up up in the much-beloved strategy/puzzle series. Pikmin 3 Deluxe will come with new difficulty settings, additional side-story missions, and all of the 18 DLC missions from the original game. The deluxe version will also come with co-op, additional online modes, and the return of the Piklopedia. The game was announced for an October 30, 2020 release date, and will be $59.99.
While some Pikmin fans were holding out for more news on the elusive Pikmin 4, which was said to be nearing completion five years ago, Pikmin 3 is one of the few big Nintendo published games that has yet to make its way over from the sinking ship of the Wii U. For reference, the Wii U sold approximately 13.56 million units over its lifetime (the worst for any Nintendo console beside the Virtual Boy), while the Nintendo Switch has already sold 61.44 million units. The announcement came in time for the company’s quarterly earnings report and is the Nintendo’s only first-party release currently slated for 2020.
Somewhat disconcertingly, Pikmin 3 was pulled from the Wii U eShop in tandem with this announcement. The game’s price had slipped to $19.99 at the time of its delisting.
