You’d be forgiven for not thinking that a famous actor would spend his free time painting tabletop figures or putting some hours into their favourite RPG, but Henry Cavill is one of the few faces in Hollywood who is so open about his love of gaming, fantasy genres, and generally nerdy topics. The numerous interviews in which he has talked about his passion for these subjects have made him a bit of a hero in the gaming community, and he has been immortalised in more than one internet meme. These are 5 of Henry Cavill’s best nerdy moments.
1 – Building a gaming PC, very seductively.
In an Instagram video that has over 6.1m views, Henry shows a shot of all his brand new hardware before documenting the build of his new gaming rig. Showing a good sense of humour, Cavill doesn’t mind showing various shots of him reading the instructions and looking confused, and he put some seductive music over the top just for laughs. it was also fun watching a man with arms the size of a tree trunk delicately placing parts into the case and motherboard.
2 – Missing a phone call from Zack Snyder because he was preoccupied with his World of Warcraft raid.
Perhaps the most famous known example of not being able to pause an online game, Cavill revealed on a Conan interview that he missed a call from Zack Snyder telling him he got the part of Superman because he was too busy running a dungeon in the popular MMO. Thankfully Henry was able to call Zack back immediately and was able to take up the superhero role.
3 – Explaining the difference between World of Warcraft and Warhammer to Graham Norton.
The most recent example, Cavill had another appearance [23:20 for the relevant section] on the BBC’s The Graham Norton Show to talk about the upcoming launch of the Witcher Season 2. The host mentioned that Henry has a number of nerdy hobbies, and Henry jokingly corrected Graham when he referred to Warhammer figures as World of Warcraft. Cavill went on to explain that there was a building/modelling side to tabletop Warhammer, as well as the gaming side. Graham light-heartedly mocked (in a British humour way) Warhammer as playing with toys, although Tom Holland expressed interest in having a match against Henry.
4 – Talking about the The Witcher’s swords.
Henry is known to be a big fan of both the Witcher games and books, and plays the protagonist Geralt in the Netflix series. In a video for Netflix, he goes into great detail about the practical aspects of the steel and silver swords that witchers utilise, as well as their symbolic meaning, outlining his deep understanding of the series’ lore. He also gave an interesting look at the production process by talking about the different types of prop swords and how they were used for the filming of the series.
5 – Xbox or Playstation?
Most likely Cavill’s most memed moment, in an interview with NME he was talking about his experience with the Witcher games, how that led to the books and ultimately his role in the Netflix series. When prompted by the interviewer about whether he was in the Xbox or Playstation camp, Cavill responded with a slightly scrunched up face “PC!” and went on to talk about how his next stage was to build his own gaming rig from scratch.
