With the announcement that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was going to be set in Ancient Greece, there were only two cities famous enough to fit the bill when it came to where the protagonist was going to be from (sorry Corinth fans, your city is pointless). As it is, it looks as though we’re all going to have to draw our 8-packs on, tie a red curtain around our necks and practice our best Scottish accents because we’re off to Sparta.
The news comes from a leak on PSN, in which the games description and art appeared briefly as an event connected to Origins, for people who own the game. The synopsis provided is as follows:
“Take control of your destiny and write your own epic odyssey as you journey to become a legendary Spartan hero. Live incredible adventures in a world where every choice matters. Rejected by your family, you must embark on an adventure from outcast mercenary to legendary Spartan hero to uncover the truth about your past.”
Whilst the offending article was quickly removed, many who received the notification managed to screenshot it and post it online, which, as we know on the internet, means Ubisoft are never getting their secret back (admittedly the cycle is only perpetuated by posts like these). The only remaining concerns, for die hard fans of the series, are whether the return to a short development cycle will only produce a carbon copy of Origin’s with few actual improvements. Of course, Assassin’s Creed 2 took the original and carved a place for itself amongst the best in the series. There is also a lingering worry that this entry may be too far from the established canon from previous entries in the series.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be released by the end of Ubisoft’s fiscal year on March 31st 2019, although a more specific release date is, as yet, unknown.
