The result of a passionate union between HP Lovecraft and the Men in Black, Remedy Entertainment’s upcoming title Control looks to be the mind-bending experience horror game fanatics have been waiting for. In a new trailer released today, showcases of otherworldly, physics-bending environments take center stage; these stand in marked contrast to the Art-deco aesthetics of the haunted brutalist skyscraper that contains said environments. The Bureau of Control, a US Government agency dedicated to control and research of the supernatural, is headquartered in this building, one that’s much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Narrating the scenes of horror is the Bureau’s director, who touches upon the origin of supernatural entities and objects and how they interact with our world.
“There is a connection between our minds and the unknown, often hostile forces intruding on our world. These forces gravitate towards everyday objects; a gun, a television, a house with a reputation of being ‘haunted.'” The camera pans through a large atrium, the bodies of Bureau agents are suspended, unmoving, in mid-air. Deeper into the building is an access tunnel which leads to a truly alien place; black pillars dominate the landscape, and blue nebula light the night sky. This house sure is haunted alright.
Control is inspired by many different works of horror. HP Lovecraft and 60’s spy thrillers lend their tropes to the game. The game and its titular Bureau of Control have also been compared to the SCP Foundation. Horror fans are sure to be pleased by the upcoming title’s setting and worldbuilding. While not featuring the gameplay seen in the original PC demo, the new trailer for the game is in-engine and showcases many of the different locations / realities you will be exploring. The trailer can be viewed on IGN’s website here. Control will be releasing at an unspecified point in 2019.
