Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout | My First Time…

I have always had a strange fascination with the battle royale genre, but never the inclination to play one, until I heard Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 had its own version of the much maligned genre. It has been a few years since I last picked up a Call of Duty game, funnily enough it was Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and it was on console. I decided to give Blackout a try and the depth of the experience was surprising.

The first round that I played I actually managed to place 4^th. This was odd considering there were 11 people left. Then, a day later, I realised I was playing solo on the quad mode. Once I switched to solo I found myself having a bit of an easier time, yet still losing most of the firefights that I got engaged in. I won’t hold the game accountable for this, however, as I was still getting used to the controls which did not make much sense to me. After some button mapping, I was definitely more confident in my ability and slowly I had started to improve.

I then moved onto duos with a friend of mine who also had limited experience with the genre. This is where the game definitely became a more enjoyable experience, for me at least. My main complaint when playing doubles is the fact that the audio quality with talking to my friend was so-so at best. It did not help the matter at all when we would go into the menus and lose audio only to get it back the moment we entered a game. Other than that having someone who could drive the vehicle for you was really fun and interesting which was a downside of playing solo.

As my first battle royale game I have to say after a little tweaking to the controls, it was very enjoyable. I liked the inclusion of the zombie locations on the map and how well the vehicles control. If there is one takeaway I would have to say playing with a squad is definitely where this mode shines. I would have played on the larger squad modes, but I feel as though playing with friends would make for a more fulfilling experience, also I wouldn’t want to be paired up with a 12-year old kid screaming into his mic. Overall, if you are interested in the genre and have a vague interest in the other modes they have to offer, then Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 should be your first battle royale game… or one of them at the very least.
