One of the gaming industry’s most well-regarded developers, CD Projekt RED is known for the Witcher franchise as well as the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. According to a recent report on Reddit, the company has been valued at over $8 billion, making it the second largest video games company in Europe, second only to Ubisoft.
What’s interesting about the news is that whilst Ubisoft owns a number of major franchises including Assassin’s Creed and Ghost Recon, CD Projekt RED is known only for the Witcher games, their spin offs and Cyberpunk 2077, which is yet to even launch, having been delayed until September. The success of the recent Witcher Netflix series caused a resurgence in sales of the games, and with hype for Cyberpunk at a high, it’s possible that the Polish developer could hit the number one spot before the year’s end.
The company has also recently announced on their Twitter page that anyone who buys Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free. For a developer as large as CDPR this is fiscally plausible as a move, but they’ll still take a sizable financial hit. In this instance it seems right to applaud the company for holding the consumer in such regard, but its also important to remember that this simply won’t be possible for 95% of developers.
