Netflix announced late Tuesday night that the highly-regarded 1998 Japanese anime series, Cowboy Bebop, is getting a live-action remake.
The live-action adaptation will be created by Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, with the anime’s original director, Shinichiro Watanabe, acting as consultant for the series.
The anime’s official description is this: “Based on the worldwide phenomenon from Sunrise Inc., Cowboy Bebop is the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, and Radical Ed: a ragtag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll save the world…for the right price.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Netflix has ordered ten episodes for Cowboy Bebop’s first season. Showrunners will include Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), Scott Rosenberg (Venom), and Jeff Pinkner (Fringe). The series first episode will be written by Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: The Dark World), who will take on the role as executive producer.
GameRVW listed Cowboy Bebop as a great introductory series for those looking to get into anime, and a “must-watch”. It encapsulates “an effortlessly stylish mishmash of neo-noir, westerns, and science fiction that liberally borrows from American culture and film”, which follows the story of Spiegel and his crew of bounty hunters, and “at its core, it is about those who are unable to escape their pasts, and how they choose to reconcile with their unfilled dreams and many debts.” You can read the full feature here, and you can also check out the trailer for the original anime series here.
