Diego Luna, well known in the modern Star Wars fandom for playing rebel spy Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is set to star in a newly announced Star Wars series. The untitled project, premiering on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, will be a “spy thriller,” detailing the lengths the ragtag Rebel Alliance went through to get the upper hand on the Empire.
The character of Captain Cassian Andor first appeared in the first Star Wars standalone movie, Rogue One. In that film, Andor was a rebel intelligence agent, traveling throughout the galaxy to gather information that would help the underdog rebellion. The film showed a noticeably darker side of the Rebel Alliance; in Cassian’s very first scene, he executes an informant whose panicking was threatening to blow his cover. Later, after rebel leadership recruits Jyn Erso to their cause with the promise of rescuing her father Galen, Cassian’s superior officer overrides those orders, telling Cassian that Galen should be eliminated once found.
Its this darker and more sordid take on the franchise that caused Rogue One to be so loved by Star Wars fanbase. A moderate deconstruction of the straightforward “good vs evil” theme that Star Wars was built on, as well as a franchise movie with an uncharacteristically high mortality rate, set it apart from the saga films. Presumably, this style of storytelling would live on in the upcoming prequel TV series.
Cassian will be likely be shown doing the dirty espionage work that kept the Alliance afloat. Rogue One did not glamorize the profession, like say, James Bond does. Expect a mature and gritty take on the battle of good vs evil. Confirmation on whether Cassian’s fan-favorite droid companion, K-2SO (played by Alan Tudyk) will appear in the series has yet to arrive.
On the new series, Luna said, “Going back to the ‘Star Wars’ universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
