E3 2019: Nintendo Direct Presentation Recap | Luigi’s Mansion 3, No More Heroes 3 + Breath Of The Wild Sequel

With GameRVW’s Head Honcho indisposed with ruined fingers, the job of reporting on Nintendo’s E3 presentation have fallen into the hands of lesser men. The plus side is that Nintendo gave out a fair bit of information during their presentation at the expo.
The presentation video opened with some DragonQuest 11 Definitive Edition S news, with a release date set for September 27th. The further reveal is that the hero from the game will be added to the roster of characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, alongside long-time favourites Banjo & Kazooie.
There are a number of games previously released on other platforms that are now confirmed to be making their way to the Nintendo Switch. The Witcher 3 collection will be making the transition, with no firm release date other than at some point in 2019. Resident Evil 5 and 6 are also making their way to the Switch in Autumn of this year.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 got a few minutes of gameplay footage, which also showed off some new features. Whilst sucking in a ghost, Luigi now has the ability to slam it into other nearby ghosts, damaging them and knocking them down. He can also deploy the Suction Shot, which he can attach to solid objects and pull them around, destroying doors and breaking open furniture. It can also be used against certain enemy types, in this example showing him disarming a shield-bearing ghost. The Burst ability can be used to jump, or as an AOE knockback when surrounded. Luigi now has a slimy companion to join him, dubbed Gooigi. Gooigi can use a different set of abilities from Luigi, such as using his gooey form to slide through metal bars T-1000 style, and can also be played by a friend, enabling two player co-op play. There is also 2-8 player local or online co-op available in the Scarescraper mode, which has you and your companions clearing out floors of ghosts against a time limit. There is no solid release date yet, with the end of the trailer stating “Available in 2019”.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses had a new story trailer, and will be released on July 26th 2019.
No More Heroes 3 got an announcement with a flashy trailer around the mid-way point of the presentation. Travis Touchdown takes on some robots, with some nice visuals and a sleek looking art style. No release date for this one other than a 2020 confirmation.
Contra had new title launched confirming previous rumours after an alleged leak. The new title, dubbed Contra Rogue Corps, releases on September 24th 2019. It’s interesting to see the franchise get a new title, but frankly, I wasn’t impressed with what I saw in the trailer, with the visuals looking dated and the gameplay clunky. Fans of the classics can enjoy the Contra Anniversary Collection on the Nintendo eShop.
Panzer Dragoon is getting a remake, with the new and improved version hitting the shelves sometime in the winter.
Pokemon Sword and Shield made their appearance, but details on the game were pretty scarce, although E3 attendees are able to play the game at the expo. There was a video describing the functionality of the Pokeball plus accessory, which can be likened to the Pokewalker from HeartGold and SoulSilver. You can transfer a Pokemon to the device, and if you spend some time with it “something good might happen”. After the Nintendo Direct presentation, gameplay footage was shown on the Nintendo Treehouse livestream.
Mario and Sonic have another Olympic Games title, tying in with the 2020 Tokyo Games, to be released in November of this year.
Animal Crossing fans had some disappointing news, with Animal Crossing New Horizons delayed until March 2020.
The Legend of Zelda fans had some good news come at the conference, including a release date for the remake of Link’s Awakening, which will arrive for the Switch on the 20th September. The game will also feature the ability to create your own dungeons using various chambers you gathered during your time playing the game. The presenation capped off with Nintendo confirming that the sequel to Breath of the Wild was in development.
