Microsoft had a pretty impressive showing at E3 this year, not least among which was Coalition’s as yet unnamed Gears of War sequel. Gears 5, as it is being referred to at present, showed off some interesting looking storylines, chunky (in a good way) gameplay and, most importantly, Fenix. As reported by wccftech, Rod Fergusson, the big boss man over at Coalition, confirmed a number of targets the developer was aiming for when it releases on Xbox some time in 2019. He said:
“Our target is always 60fps, and we believe – with everything we’ve done, the learning we’ve taken from Gears 4, and the optimizations we’ve been able to do beyond that – that’s exactly what we’re going to be doing, 60fps at 4K. The new technology of this generation has been fantastic.”
Up until now, achieving 60fps at 4k resolution on a games console seemed like a bit of a pipe dream, but the technological prowess of the Xbox One X has opened new ground for the right developer to step in to. Not only that, but the increased integration between Xbox and PC has given games like these the ability to go even further. In this regard, Fergusson had this to say:
“Having a game that we’re building from the ground up for PC means players will be able to take advantage of all the types of different PC optimization options you can have. You’ll be able to max it to quite high. It’s still reasonably early, but we can usually get to 120fps. It’s obviously going to matter what hardware you’re using to get that – but it’ll be able to scale up that high if the hardware can push it”
Wow. I’m fairly sure that those specifications are enough to get anyone excited for Gears eventual release. Although some remain sceptical about the Xbox’s perceived encroachment into the world of PC gaming, the fact that it is producing games which are able to output at such quality can only be a good thing.
