Sony’s conference at E3 this year was good, but the real standout moment came from The Last of Us Part II, as the sequel to 2013’s best game showed off some hugely impressive gameplay and innovative storytelling. In a pretty shocking turn of events, head of Eidos Montreal, David Anfossi, called the demonstration “fake” in a reply to a tweet referencing the showcase. Although it was quickly deleted, animator Jonathan Cooper, who worked on the game and a number of other titles, screen grabbed it and shared it in all its glory.
It’s since deleted, but the studio head of Shadow of The Tomb Raider just accused the animation of our The Last of Us Part II demo of being fake. C’est trop délicieux! pic.twitter.com/NsU0ZikPlS

Anfossi, now his comments are out in the open, has since apologised and blamed his poor wording on English being his second language. Fair enough. It does look as though he was also the recipient of some choice comments on the part of fans of the series and, in more general terms, Naughty Dog. In further response, Cooper said that he and Anfossi had buried the hatchet, and appealed to those who were attacking him to cease and desist.
OK guys, he apologised so calm down a wee bit. On a related note today we shared that we completely overhauled the animation system from Uncharted with a new cutting-edge system for ultra fluidity/seamlessness with invisible transitions. See here @ 11m09s: https://t.co/RiVlO7VI8g

In the run up to the launch of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, this isn’t a particularly good look for Eidos Montreal, or Anfossi himself. Having said that, by the time the game does come out in September, this will be all but forgotten. As for The Last of Us Part II, well, it certainly doesn’t need any more publicity but if nothing else, this will reaffirm the faith that fans have for the series.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on the 14th Septmber 2018.
