The DC Universe is a streaming service launched last September that is, as you might expect, jam packed with all things DC. From comics to animated shows and movies, as well as some of the classic movies from their history. Now that Young Justice: Outsiders has dropped, is the streaming service worth it’s cost of entry.
DC Universe does more than just streaming, setting itself apart by including a wide selection of comics for your reading pleasure. Is that enough to justify paying as much as other services for exclusively DC content? The answer to this question is the same as if you were to subscribe to any of said other services – it depends.
If you want to be able to take full advantage of what the app has to offer, then I suggest not getting it unless you have an iPad or Android tablet. As of now, there is no support for the kindle fire so if you are looking to read the comics the subscription allows for a tablet is not the only way, but it is the best. If you are a mega fan of all DC, pick it up immediately because the original content coming down the line looks promising and entertaining. If you are only going to get it to watch the latest season of Young justice, hold off and buy it for a month to binge watch it when the season concludes. There is currently no support for the PS4 and Xbox One, so those looking to stream it on those devices are out of luck for now. If you intend on streaming it on TV then you would need one of the following; Apple(4th gen or higher)/Android TV, a Roku, or an Amazon Fire TV.
To those who grew up with the DCAU and the other animated programmes, this collects all of them in one place making it convenient to go back and relive it. The service also collects classic movies for those wanting to watch the classics whether to appreciate the past, or for the experience alone. They have taken a lot of time to develop this and make it a fans best experience. The quality is definitely there along with some cool additions like being able to read related comics to the shows your watching. This is good for those looking to get the most out of their time and who want a deeper understanding of the content. You can also read the comics online or on the TV making it possible for anyone with the subscription to read them.
If the $8 a month is something you would be willing to swallow, then this service will not disappoint you. However, if it is the full experience you are after, make sure you have a compatible tablet or a way to read the comics the way you want to read them. In conclusion this app is not for everybody and Young Justice alone is not enough to keep a monthly subscription. But, if you are a fan of DC this is definitly the app for you.
