Daredevil, one of Netflix’s most successful original programs, has officially been cancelled.
The cancellation was announced in a statement made to Deadline by Netflix on November 29 saying, “Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
Daredevil is just one of many of Netflix’s original Marvel shows to be cancelled this year; it was preceeded by Iron Fist and Luke Cage, leaving only The Punisher and Jessica Jones. The Punisher will be returning sometime in 2019, and season 3 of Jessica Jones is in production.
Daredevil was the flagship series that jump-started a string of Marvel shows on Netflix, so the fate of the remaining two shows after their next seasons wrap up is questionable at best, especially since Daredevil was one of the most critically praised series on Netflix.
Fans of the show were excited to hear about the future of Daredevil after Oleson tweeted earlier this month about his pitch for a season 4. The tweet was made on November 19, just two weeks before the official cancellation.
The end of season three of Daredevil left many unanswered questions about where the series could go next, but unfortunately, it looks like fans will never get final answers.
