Recently, Microsoft announced a price increase to it’s Xbox Live Gold membership, to the point that the cheapest option for an annual membership would be the purchase of two 6-month memberships for $60 each, which was twice the cost of the previous arrangement.
However, the backlash resulting from this decision caused Microsoft to reverse the action less than 24 hours after it was made. It has been suggested by many reporting on the news (credit to Gamesindustry.biz) that Microsoft were attempting to convert people to Xbox Games Pass Ultimate, which combines both Xbox Live Gold with Games Pass. In an additional move, Microsoft have stated that any free to play multiplayer title will not require Xbox Live Gold.
“We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.”
“We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.“
