After more than four years since the last entry in the series, Gearbox has officially announced Borderlands 3. Featuring four new playable characters, the launch trailer has a feast of new information. We see a diverse set of locales including swampy bayous, desolate wastelands, and utopian futuristic cities. Procedurally generated guns will be making a return, with the promise of over a billion weapons. We also saw a tease at the game’s villains, a black haired man, and a white-haired woman, who together lead a cult.
Although there are still many questions, such as a release window and the platforms it will be released on, the new reveal seems to corroborate at least some of the previously leaked information (warning the leak contains potential spoilers)
The leak ascribes archetypes to each of the four characters show in the trailer. The character on the left in the image above is this game’s close ranged class, but is also a Siren, meaning she has telekinetic powers. Second from the left is an android named Flak, who has the ability to summon animals. To the right of him is a character with the ability to summon mechs. And lastly, all the way to the right is a gadget-driven stealth character.
Perhaps most excitingly, the leak also states that each of the classes will have multiple abilities with quicker cooldowns, seemingly inspired by hero shooters like Overwatch (or Battleborne I guess). While the validity of the leak is still in question, the recently released trailer and rumors paint quite an exciting picture for the long-awaited Borderlands followup.
