As PAX East approaches, it’s time to take stock of a few of the games we will likely be covering in the coming days. Spanning from Thursday, March 28 to Sunday, March 31st, PAX East will host a wide variety of titles from AAA, to smaller indies. While our focus will mostly be on finding new and exciting indies, we will also be covering some more well-known and anticipated titles. Let’s run it down.
Shovel Knight: King of Cards / Shovel Knight Showdown
After five years of Shovel Knight expansions, Yacht Clubs Games will finally have completed the promised campaigns from their original Kickstarter with the release of King of Cards and Shovel Knight Showdown. King of Cards stars King Knight, and players can expect retro-styled platforming with a little hint of the shoulder charging combat of the Wario World games. Meanwhile, Showdown is a multiplayer expansion that allows players to choose from various characters and beat on one another.
Super Meat Boy Forever
While the original Super Meat Boy was a huge hit that served to popularize a particular unforgiving brand of twitch platformer, eight years later, we still haven’t received a sequel. However, it looks like that will change later this year when Team Meat puts out Super Meat Boy Forever. It’s a procedurally generated affair that was initially designed to be a mobile game, but that will now be coming out on Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Killer Queen Black
Killer Queen Black will bring the strategy platforming gameplay of the original arcade cabinet to consoles later this year. After years of existing as a sought after, but difficult to find competitive experience, it’s exciting that the game will finally reach a much bigger audience.
Falcon Age
Falcon Age is an action-adventure PSVR game that tasks the player with raising a falcon baby. Beyond being painfully adorable, the trailer also shows hunting and scavenging mechanics. It is set against the backdrop of a war between colonists and the indigenous people of an alien planet.
Splitgate: Arena Warfare
Coming from vintage Halo enthusiasts, Splitgate has been described as a mix of old-school Halo and Portal. With the Call of Duty model so deeply ingrained in modern FPS, developer 1047 games will potentially offer an alternative that harkens back to the days of Halo 1-3, but with a Portal gun.
Dicey Dungeon
Terry Cavanagh, the developer behind Super Hexagon and VVVVVV, has teamed up with Marlowe Dobbe and Chipzel to craft a dice-based roguelike. Tasking players with surviving a gauntlet of turn-based battles, this deck building RPG looks to be a challenging affair. An alpha version of the game is available on Itch.io.
