According to reporting from Video Games Chronicle, a remake of Resident Evil 4 has just recently entered production. Development is allegedly being handled by M-Two, a studio helmed by PlatinumGames’ ex-CEO Tatsuya Minami. M-Two was founded in December of last year, and the studio assisted in the development of the recent Resident Evil 3 remake.
While many fans assumed that the news was something of an inevitability considering the widespread financial success and relative acclaim of the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, these rumors seem to imply that the project is actually happening. Resident Evil 4 was a seminal release in 2005, defining the third-person shooter genre as it shifted the Resident Evil series in a more action-oriented direction. Since the game launched on the GameCube, it received additional content with its PS2 release, got motion-control support on the Wii, and then was remastered on the PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
It will be interesting to see how this alleged remake handles recreating the beloved classic. With the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remakes Capcom took numerous liberties, adding entirely new areas and enemies while omitting much of what was in the original releases. They also uprooted the core gameplay of those titles, replacing fixed-camera angles with modernized third-person shooting akin to what was introduced in Resident Evil 4. Considering that Resident Evil 4 popularized this paradigm in the first place, M-Two and Capcom will likely need to get creative if they want to create a similarly fresh experience. According to the leak, the remake is currently scheduled for 2022.
This news comes just a few days after apparent leaks concerning the next mainline entry in the series, Resident Evil 8: Village. That game will reportedly be a direct sequel to the previous entry, once again featuring a first-person perspective and protagonist Ethan Winters. The leaker stated that the game will be a large departure from the series, containing gothic horror archetypes like werewolves and witches. Resident Evil 8 is rumored for a 2021 release.
