Resident Evil 2 is slated for release on January 25, 2019, and is a full remake of the 1998 classic. We’re just over a month away from that dropping, and there’s a possibility that Capcom is already developing a remake of the game’s sequel, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
According to a leak from a poster going by the name of DuskGolem, development of a RE3 remake is already in full swing, saying,
“Resident Evil 3 Remake is already in development. I hope Code Veronica happens as I do feel it’s the RE game most in need of a remake, but RE3 is the last mainline RE game that needed a version for easier porting in the future (RE0, RE1, RE2 (after REmake 2 comes out), Code Veronica, RE4, RE5, RE6, RE7, Revelations & Revelations 2 all have versions on MT Framework and RE Engine that be ported to future consoles, only RE3 is missing after REmake 2).”
While the veracity rumor is difficult to verify, DuskGolem accurately leaked previous Resident Evil information, such as the Not a Hero DLC for Resident Evil 7. Additionally, Capcom said during its quarterly earnings call that the company would explore the opportunity for additional remakes of older titles:
“Further, regarding remakes and re-releases of titles in our back catalog, we expect to explore these further with a variety of properties as a part of our strategy to utilize our library of IP”.
A tweet on Friday the 13th this year by the official Resident Evil account raised eyebrows as well, since it featured a picture of the iconic Nemesis creature from the third game.
Capcom’s other IPs, such as Dino Crisis and Onimusha, could also be contenders for remakes and re-releases, since both franchises have a devoted fan-base, and an HD remaster of 2001’s Onimusha: Warlords is also scheduled for a January 15, 2019 release, just ten days before Resident Evil 2.
While the remake of Resident Evil 2 has yet to release, both the company and fans are confident of the game’s success; Capcom previously stated the game is meant to be a “million-seller” and meant to appeal to a global audience, and fans for the most part, are pleased with the direction of the upcoming game.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a beloved entry in the series, and a remake of the game, right after a remake of what many consider to be the pinnacle of the survival horror genre, wouldn’t be that surprising.
