The next major expansion for Bioware’s Star Wars MMORPG has been announced. Onslaught is coming to The Old Republic this September, and with it, plenty of new content and features. Announced at Star Wars Celebration, the new expansion will be free to all current subscribers when the release rolls around.
The biggest aspect of this expansion is the new storyline. With war between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic reignited, the Imperials plot to capture the shipbuilding planet of Corellia (the future birthplace and home of Han Solo) and destroy the Republic’s ability to resist in one fell swoop. In addition to a new Flashpoint set on Corellia, the expansion also features two new planets; Onderon and Mek-Sha. Fans of Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords will recognize Onderon; a planet teeming with beasts and danger, where a monarchy rules over the planet’s walled, massive city, the only settlement on the planet. In addition to Onderon, a “planet” making its Star Wars debut is also featured; Mek-Sha, a cobbled together port in the skeleton of a mined asteroid, filled with spacers from all over the galaxy.
Along with these new worldspaces, a new endgame operation (raid) is also coming in September. Set on Onderon’s moon, Dxun (which was also present in The Sith Lords) players will fight back against the dastardly Czerka Corporation who are attempting to use the planet’s wildlife and dark side energy for their own nefarious goals. Coupled with the new Corellian flashpoint, this will give max-level characters additional challenges to face.
Also coming in the expansion are major itemization changes. Though Bioware has been relatively vague on what it will entail, we do know that a new type of gear, Tactical Items, will be added to the game. These allow you to customize your play-style much further than you can currently; even non-combat roles such as crafting can be buffed with these items. Finally, a long-requested race has been added to the playable roster: Nautolans, who you might recognize as the species of Kit Fisto, the smiling Jedi Knight.
