Two entries in the long-running Legend of Zelda series, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, were given HD remasters back in 2013 and 2016 for the Wii U. And after a tease at a live Legend of Zelda musical concert in Osaka, Japan, by Zelda producer, Eijii Aonuma, many fans are wondering if a remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is currently in development. Aonuma made an on-stage appearance, reportedly saying, “I know what you’re thinking, Skyward Sword for Switch, right?”
The comment was met with cheers and applause, but nothing else was said on the matter. No official statements from Aonuma or Nintendo have been made since. However, there are quite a lot of reasons why a Skyward Sword remaster for the Switch could be a possibility. After Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, the next game in line for the remaster treatment is SS, originally released in 2011 for the Nintendo Wii and the last “new” Zelda game to be released before Breath of the Wild in March 2017.
Nintendo also seems to be interested in releasing a new Zelda game every year, or at least a game that has Link and other characters from Hyrule in it. Hyrule Warriors was released in 2018, so a game featuring The Legend of Zelda property did in fact come out this year. It’s also been confirmed that Nintendo is working on a new, unannounced Zelda project, due to a leaked job listing. This could be the Skyward Sword remaster, or it could be the next entry in the main series and of course it could be something completely different.
While many fans would be excited for a remaster of SS, the game remains as one of the most divisive games in the franchise. Many players both loved and hated the motion controls and the required Wii Motion Plus that were used to play the game, but that could be why a Switch remaster makes sense. The Joy-Con controllers feature motion control support and HD rumble capabilities, so it is possible to keep all of the motion controls from the game and improve upon them, without completely changing systems the original release were based around. Or would this be an even bigger project and the entire infrastructure of the game be re-worked to make a game without motion controls?
It’s all speculation at this point, but after the massive success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, fans of the series are eager to dive back into Hyrule, and Skyward Sword HD could be on the horizon.
