The Gamers’ Choice Awards, which showcases fan-favorite video games from the year, aired this weekend, marking Fortnite among gamers favorite game from 2018.
Unlike the Game Awards show in Los Angeles on Thursday, which was only available via livestream, the Gamers’ Choice Awards was shown on CBS for an hour on Saturday, making it the first video games awards show on a broadcast network. All categories highlight “fan favorites” from video games released this year, to favorite streamers, and even favorite video game moments.
Fortnite stole the show, taking home five ‘fan-favorite’ awards, most notably as “Fan Favorite Game’, beating out both God of War and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Ninja, a popular Twitch streamer of Fortnite, won ‘Fan Favorite Gaming Moment ’, ‘Fan Favorite Esports Player’ (Fortnite/Overall), and the ‘Fan Favorite Supernova Award’; Ninja won the second most awards of the night.
The GCA also had winners in other esports games, like PUBG, Super Smash Bros Melee, and DragonBall FighterZ, highlighting those who play video games competitively and the moments that fans won’t forget from esports this year, like Cloud9 winning the Boston Major.
