Capcom’s Monster Hunter: World is now available on Steam. Originally released in January 2018 on the Xbox One and he PS4, Capcom announced that they were planning a PC release later in the year. The action role-playing game sees you hunting down gargantuan beasts in difficult boss fights, harvesting resources from your kills and the environment, and exploring an expansive world filled full of varied biomes and terrain.
You are a hunter, someone with special talents and training that allows them to take down the giant beasts that roam the New World. Players pick from a wide range of weapons, gadgets, and armor to fit their playstyle; tweaking as they go in response to the various tactics used by their quarry. Flying dragons means its time to break out a long gun, while a heavy-hitting yet slow-moving quadraped might be best countered by a greatsword, with the hunter waiting for an opening and slicing at weakpoints. Players bring down these beasts for crafting components and currency which allows them to obtain better gear, opening up further areas and more difficult hunts. Up to four players can participate in a co-op session, with monster difficulty and rewards appropriately scaled-up.
The game was well-received and quite popular on consoles, with many calling it one of the best games of the year. This success seems to be continuing; the game’s Steam release is already smashing records. A highly anticipated PC title, the game reached over 240,000 concurrent players on its first day of release, with these numbers only continuing to rise. Early reviews mention the quality of the PC port, however, some players and publications report difficulties running the game on certain hardware, so do your research before jumping in! For fans of action-RPGs and Dark Souls-like combat (with a more manageable difficulty), Monster Hunter: World is a fantastic purchase.
