You’ve got to hand it to Ubisoft, they are consistently trying to find ways to keep the Assassin’s Creed series relevant and interesting. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will feature RPG style consequences including dialogue options (which we knew about already) and dynamic decision making that affects how the game plays out.
Ubisoft Quebec look like they are trying to expand on the rejuvenation of the series, sparked by Ubisoft Montreal’s Assassin’s Creed Origins. This game saw the series move towards an RPG oriented future and Odyssey is set to build on this with even more traditional RPG elements.
Dialogue options may sometimes be as simple as asking multiple questions for more background information, or being able to choose from a variety of emotional responses. The player will also have to make bigger decisions that have a larger impact on the story. One mission might force you to choose between two people’s ideas; do you take a more strategic approach or do you go with good ol’ fashioned brute force? Whatever your decision, you will only be able to experience one mission setup, and subsequent outcome, per single playthrough.
Odyssey will also throw you some moral conundrums. One side quest will see the player face a prisoner. You can either release him, kill him, or if you’re utterly crazy, skip the quest entirely. Now for me, these sorts of decisions are fundamental to any decent RPG. I love being able to choose if my character is a brutal anti-hero or an empathetic, Mother Theresa like saint. There have been some cries of derision from those who feel the series is straying too far from the formula they love, and towards something other games, such as The Witcher 3, have already achieved so successfully.
With further details on the game coming out all the time, and with further news about where this latest game fits into the established canon, it’s a good time to be a fan of Assassin’s Creed. We shall have to see if they can pull it off but if they do manage to build upon the foundation laid out in Origins, then we could see a Brotherhood like increase in quality, and that’s very exciting.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set to release at some point in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC
